Gary Vaynerchuk with Brooklyn Brewery’s Brewmaster Garrett Oliver

Gary Vaynerchuk pumps out another AWESOME episode of Wine Library TV where he goes to Brooklyn, NY to talk to Brooklyn Brewery’s brewmaster Garrett Oliver.  The interview runs almost 40 minutes long.

In the episode, they try Brooklyn’s Local 1, Local 2, and Black Ops, none of which I’ve tried.   (I do know a DC store that carries Local 1 and Local 2.  I’ll go pick them up. Ha.)

They also talk a lot about Garrett’s background and his passion for beer and pushing the boundaries of beer making.  Sounds like Garrett has done some really fascinating collaborations with outside groups to make beers that you wouldn’t normally be able to get.  From the interview, you get the impression that Garrett is a really dynamic guy and that he’d be fun to talk to.

One thing that stood out for me was how, on Friday nights, they transform the brewery into a town gathering place where everyone (young and old) gathers to celebrate the week.   He said it was very much alike to the notion of a beer garden in Germany.

Here’s the episode.  It’s so good.  As I was watching it on the subway today, I missed my stop because I was so engrossed in it…

Oktoberfest in the West Bank

The West Bank isn’t the first place I think of when I think of a Oktoberfest celebration.  Well, this morning I read an interesting article in the Washington Post about a brewer in Taybeh, West Bank, who has been brewing beer that’s becoming ever more popular around the world and their Oktoberfest celebration is in its fifth year.  Cool!

To the usual images of conflict, checkpoints — and in the case of areas influenced by Islamist groups such as Hamas, an intolerance of alcohol — Khoury and his family-owned Taybeh brewery have added an Oktoberfest, a weekend of music, dancing, local crafts and free-flowing suds, just to the east of Ramallah and across the valley from nearby Israeli settlements. To the usual lineup of traditional products like olive oil and honey, he has added a lager that has caught on in Japan and been franchised for production in Germany.

The 2009 Dogfish Head Punkin Ale Debuts in the Washington, DC Area

Yeah yeah yeah… I’m becoming a fan boy of Dogfish Head beers but they’re so dang good.

Thus, I was excited to hear that Dogfish Head Brewery is debuting their 2009 Punkin Ale (their fall Pumpkin beer) at their Washington DC area ale houses over the next couple of days with release parties.

If I wasn’t busy the next few days, I’d definitely go to one of the release parties.  I haven’t had this beer yet but it sounds awesome.  I’m excited to see when the Punkin Ale will make its way to local beer stores.  As I said, pumpkin and fall beers are one of my favorite things about this impending change of seasons.

If you can make it to a release party, report back and let me know how it goes.
