Why I Cook…
Posted by Justin Thorp in Famous Chefs, Meta on February 26th, 2010
Well known chef and author Michael Ruhlman recently wrote a post about why he cooks and what got him into cooking. It’s a pretty cool post.
He asked other food bloggers to write about why they cook. It got me thinking so I thought I’d participate in the conversation.
- I cook because I love to eat. There’s something so satisfying about making food and then getting to personally enjoy the fruit of your labor.
- I cook because there’s a satisfaction that I get from making something with my hands.
- I cook because it’s an escape for me. When I cook, my kitchen because my own little world that I escape into. After a busy work at week, I like nothing better than spending a day cooking.
- I cook because understanding a culture’s cuisine helps me to connect so much and better understand that culture.
- I cook because it’s an expression of myself. I think, whenever you make something with your hands and then give it to someone else, you’re showing the world a lot about who you are.
- I cook because I love serving my friends and family.
Why do you cook? Spell it out for us. Drop it in the comments or write a post in your own blog.
Eating With Your Co-Workers…
Posted by Justin Thorp in Meta on July 15th, 2009
In my opening post, I talked about how eating and drinking always seemed to be a catalyst for community. Was thinking about this last night and great example of this was a job or two ago, when all my co-workers and I would always have lunch together.
Tom was the ring leader. We called him the “lunch king.” He’d pick the place and rally the troops to head there.
It was always a great time. We could get into some of the craziest conversations about culture, entertainment or politics. If it was politics, the conversation could actually get pretty heated but it never ultimately divided us.
These lunches made us close. It gave us an opportunity to get to know each other in a way that was deeper then we ever could in meetings or working on projects together.
At my current job, I’m glad there are a gang of us that don’t eat at our desks but that eat together.
Do you eat together with your co-workers? If so, how has it help to make your office a more cohesive team?
Welcome!

Hi, my name is Justin Thorp. Welcome to my blog “Justin Loves Food” and yes I do love food.
Food has obvious nutritional value but for me it’s SO much more than that. For me, eating and drinking has always been a catalyst for community with family and friends.
Growing up, we’d always eat dinner together as a family. Now when the family is together back home, we may end up sitting around the table talking for 2 or 3 hours, staying well after all the plates and food has been cleared off the table.
Now, I’m out on my own and living in Washington, DC, USA.
One of my favorite things has been learning about new cuisines, how to prepare them, and of course eat them… hopefully sharing it with others.
With this blog, I want to share my various culinary adventures, as my friends, family, and I explore both DC, the rest of the USA, and even the world.
