Crumbs Bakery Cupcakes Coming to Washington DC
Posted by Justin Thorp in Cupcakes on February 18th, 2010
According to the Washingtonian, Crumbs Bakery and their amazing cupcakes are going to be making their way to Washington DC this March 2010.
The New York-based bakery chain Crumbs will roll out seven stores here starting in May. The two-fister confections come in such sugar-shock-inducing flavors as cookie-dough—which is filled with chocolate fudge and topped with chocolate-chip-cookie-flecked cream-cheese frosting—as well as vanilla topped with M&Ms and chocolate cake with strawberry-jam filling and chocolate-buttercream icing. Our favorite is an oversize riff on the Hostess cupcake with a vanilla-cream filling, which thankfully doesn’t taste like it was created in a Midwestern chemistry lab. The outposts will spring up in DC—Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, downtown, Cleveland Park—plus Reston, Clarendon, and Rockville.
I’d usually say, “Ho hum another cupcake place in DC” but these cupcakes are frickin’ awesome. I’ve had them in my various travels to LA and New York City.
Will let you guys know when they officially open their first store in the District.
Cupcakes Coming to Taco Bell?
Posted by Justin Thorp in Cupcakes, Restaurants, Trends on October 10th, 2009
Slashfood is reporting that Taco Bell is testing cupcakes in some of its markets, along with smoothies and shakes. Huh? I guess the smoothies and shakes don’t confuse me that much but cupcakes?!?
I guess I understand that one of these food mega giants would want to capitalize on the cupcake revolution that’s taking place and really bring the trend the masses but Taco Bell?!?
What do you think? Think cupcakes at Taco Bell is a good move?
Is The Cupcake Bubble About To Burst?
Posted by Justin Thorp in Cupcakes, Trends on September 6th, 2009
Slate put out a really interesting article on Thursday about how we’ve seen a huge rise in cupcake shops across America’s metropolitan centers and that this is a bubble that we’re about to see burst.
In the article, he talks about how, while times are good, people will be able to afford these $3 sugary treats. As more and more people start getting hit by the recession, things like cupcake purchases will be the first things to go.
The stores that were in there from the beginning have been able to attract the audiences and reap the rewards of the revenue. Everyone else, who’s been just jumping on to the trend, will have a harder time of turning their store into a sustainable business.
This totally makes sense.
If I was thinking about starting a cupcake shop, I’d just want to make it more than just a cupcake shop. Here in Washington DC we have some interesting examples of this. Baked & Wired in Georgetown have made themselves into a real full service coffeeshop along with having AMAZING cupcakes. At Red Velvet in Chinatown, there is literally just a counter with cupcakes.
While a consuming a cupcake is more of an occasional expense, a cup of coffee is a regular part of my life. I’d much more easily see Baked & Wired becoming part of my life and I’d imagine being a more sustainable business.
Have you been to a cupcake place lately? How much did you pay?
How Much Would You Pay for a Cupcake?
Posted by Justin Thorp in Cupcakes on July 15th, 2009
So… I was on my way back home after a meeting and I saw there was this cupcake place that I had never seen before. It’s called Red Velvet Cupcakery. Decided, I’d stop by and pickup a couple. (Wanted to do some research for the blog.)
The cupcakes were $3.25 per cupcake and $36 per dozen. Now that are cupcakes which are pretty decked out and pretty extravagant but these were pretty simple and straightforward cupcakes. They looked of the shape and size that your mom would make, growing up.
It got me thinking. Is this cupcake really worth $3.25?!?!?!
At Baked & Wired the cupcakes have a little bit of heft to them, which makes me feel like I’m getting something for my $3.

Baked & Wired in Georgetown and the Cupcake Revolution
Posted by Justin Thorp in Coffee Shops, Cupcakes on July 11th, 2009
This Thursday I attended a technology event at the cupcake/coffee shop, Baked & Wired, in the neighborhood Georgetown of Washington, DC. (There is something awesome about technology, coffee, and cupcakes but we’ll save that for another post.)
Tucked away on Thomas Jefferson Ave off of the main passage way M Street, Baked & Wired is a quiet little place where you can get a good cup of coffee (I think they brew counter Counter Culture coffee, like Peregrine.) and a really good cupcake.
Their cupcakes are rich, sugary, and heavy. When you’re done eating one, you feel like your teeth are about to fall out. If a sugar coma is a feeling that you’re going for, seek this place out.
Above & beyond Baked & Wired, cupcakes have definitely become a trend that I’m starting to notice everywhere. People are nuts about cupcakes. We have multiple cupcake shops here in DC. Two that a lot of my friends talk about are Cake Love and Georgetown Cupcakes.
Martha Stewart even has a cook book about nothing but cupcakes.
Well in the future, we’ll definitely be exploring the cupcake revolution. (Heh… writing this blog is such a yummy yummy job.)
